If I’d hoped the half hour drive from Estes Park to Lyons would provide any inspiration on where to begin other than the hope something would be triggered or feel off, I was sorely disappointed. As I pulled the Mini Cooper into a parking spot in front of the Green Munchies, I didn’t have the hint of a plan. I’d even lost some of the initial fire behind the impulse.

Watson, however, was on cloud nine, and very atypically ungrumpy. Perhaps he’d been excited to postpone his mascot duties at the Cozy Corgi or, more likely, was reveling at spending the morning with Leo. It never ceased to amaze me that even with all the time Leo spent with us, every occasion with Leo was like the corgi version of catnip. Of course, I couldn’t quite blame Watson for his reaction. Turned out, Leo was the Fred version of catnip as well.

Leo paused at the front door and glanced over his shoulder to where I still stood by the car. “You okay? You’ve got a strange look. What are you thinking?”

I felt my cheeks burn, and I waved him off. “Oh, nothing. Just… trying to come up with a plan.” Putting a little get-up in my step, I quickly joined Leo and Watson on the porch and gestured for him to open the door. “Let’s wing it.”

Though things had been rearranged since I’d been in before, which seemed like a lifetime ago, the Green Munchies still felt like the combination of an Apple computer store and a fancy bakery. Everything was sleek, modern, and expensive. One side of the store was artfully arranged with endless marijuana paraphernalia, tools, and equipment, all of them as foreign to me as if I’d been dropped into a chemist’s lab. On the other, the section was divided in half, with one wall taken up by a brightly lit glass display case, showing endless types of dried cannabis in various forms. Some of them looked like ground-up oregano, others like dried balls of seaweed. The mirroring case offered a selection of baked goods that would’ve made Katie proud. Fancy bars of chocolate, thick brownies, assortments of candy, beautifully decorated cupcakes, and cookies—all containing an ingredient Katie left out of her creations at the Cozy Corgi.

When I noticed the tall woman standing behind the bakery portion, I realized the shop had one more comparison that hadn’t been present before when the late Eddie had worked there. Not only was it one part Apple store, one part bakery, but with the beautiful, voluptuous blond, it was one part Victoria’s Secret. Her sapphire-blue gaze slid over me as if I was a ghost and landed on my park ranger.

Leo was winding Watson’s leash around his hand, making it shorter. “For sure don’t want you getting into anything in here. That could spell disaster.”

“Actually, we do have a very small collection of dog treats with minuscule traces of CBD oil in them. All the benefit”—her voice, as sultry as her appearance, dipped when Leo faced her—“none of the fun.
